Nicolas, D. Ainé: Mirecourt - France - 1770s A rare Baroque guitar by the well-known French luthier, Didier Nicolas (1757-1833), who was a leading guitar and violin maker in Mirecourt, France, winning the 1802 Best Luthier in Mirecourt award. This guitar was originally constructed as a 5-Course (10-String) Baroque Guitar in the 1770s, and was later converted to the more modern 6-string guitar, by filling the extra peg holes and installing a new bridge. The guitar has a spruce top, with several repaired and cleated cracks, the binding and rosette are edged with mother-of-pearl and ebony, the solid fruit wood back and sides both have several repaired and cleated cracks. The original neck and headstock were made with 10 pegs, of which 5 original pegs remain, and 4 of the peg holes were plugged in the 6-string conversion. It has an ebony fingerboard with frets and mother-of-pearl binding, and the non-original ebony bridge was installed during the conversion from 10- to 6-strings. This guitar is a good candidate to be be converted back to a 5 course Baroque guitar. The neck is still relatively straight neck, but currently high action is a bit high, which would need to be addressed in a future renovation to get it back to a professional playing period instrument. Comes in 18th Century wooden coffin case. This beautiful instrument with high artistic design and ornamentation is sold unrestored, as-Is. For more information contact the seller directly. Antique 1869 Alois Suter (Näfels, Glarus, Switzerland) Classical Guitar w/Coffin Case Nut Width 1 7/8" (47 mm); Scale Length: 635 mm Total Length: 916 mm; Lower Bout: 305 mm; Body Depth: 89 mm Restored by West Texas Luthier, Michael Turko Up for consideration is an extremely rare classical guitar by the well-known Swiss builder, Alois Suter -- who is most famous as a cittern maker, with the original label reading: Alois Suter, 1869, Näfels, Kt. Glarus. The guitar has a Spruce top, with a solid, flamed-maple back and sides, with a stained fruitwood neck and peghead, and six pegs. The fingerboard is also made of stained fruitwood (some of the stain now showing uncovered wood) bone frets and nut, along with the stained bridge and bone saddle. It is in good condition, having had several repairs made over the years, comes with the original wooden coffin case. The first 3 frets are brass, and it still has a relatively straight neck, with medium-high action -- but with a bridge saddle that is still tall enough to allow for further lowering of the action. The guitar is now quite playable and very stable, as it has just been gone through by West Texas luthier, Michael Turko, and is strung with Dogal Venetian Classical Guitar Strings (NR88 Soft Tension). Mougeot, Paris - France around 1840 A fine French romantic guitar stamped by the maker: Mougeot à Paris. Solid spruce top, birdseye curly maple over spruce back, birdseye curly maple solid sides, veneered neck and peghead with six non original pegs, bridge with metal saddle. The neck is straight, but the replacement bridge is a little too high and should be sanded down a bit. Also the metal saddle should be replaced and the frets levelled. The pegs seem to work. There are 3 hairline cracks only in the lamination of the back and one next to the fingerboard on the bass side of the top. Some lamination on the heel needs to be reglued. An evening of 19th Century Guitars at the University of British Columbia School of Music These guitars will be exhibited on Saturday, November 30, 2019 from 7:30pm to 9:00pm at the Roy Barnett Recital Hall - UBC School of Music 6361 Memorial Road, Vancouver, BC, V6T 1Z2, Canada Vancouver Classic Guitar Society Join us for a presentation featuring UBC students performing 19th-century repertoire on authentic romantic guitars. UBC instructor Alec Pearson will talk a bit about the history of the instruments and their builders. Instrument collector Roger Bruderlin will also join in, discussing his experience spending years of collecting all sorts of historical musical instruments. This event is free to the public. In this video Alec Pearson (right) is playing the Fabricatore guitar and Luis Medina Rodriguez the Parizot at the Kaslo Guitar Fest in 2018. This was an impromptu concert and was recorded live on an iPad. The musicians had not seen or played these guitars before, nor did they play this arrangement together. |

Lacote, Rene: Paris - France dated 1864 ~ (from the R. & A. Bruderlin Collection) Highly important all original French guitar by René Lacote, dated 1864 and bearing the original label: Rue des Martyrs 20, Lacote Luthier Paris, année 1864. Spruce top, fancy curly maple back with spruce inner layer, solid curly maple sides, good straight maple neck with ebony fingerboard and good frets, ivory nut, ebony bridge with ivory saddle, enclosed machine heads with ivory tuners, one roller with a repair, face of the headstock is veneered in ebony and stamped: Lacote Paris in gold letters. Comes in original steel traveling case. Panormo, G. L. : London - England dated 1864 ~ (from the R. & A. Bruderlin Collection) A high quality, playable English guitar bearing the original label: G.L. Panormo, London 1864, 87 John Street, Tottenham Court Road. Has "P" stamped on the soundhole brace. Spruce top (small hairline crack repaired), solid rosewood (maybe African ebony) back and sides, mahogany neck andhead, machine heads (stamped: Baker) with brass and ivory tuners, one replaced roller made from brass, ebony fingerboard and bridge, ivory nut. Unreal original condition, good straight neck, good action, a real player. Comes in luxurios original coffin case. Spruce top, highly figured satinwood back and sides, maple neck and head, machineheads with brass and bone enclosed tuners, head stamped Lacote à Paris in gold letters, ebony fingerboard with bone nut, ebony bridge with bone saddle. Spruce top with mother-of-pearl bindings and rosette, solid curly maple back and sides, ebony veneered neck and machinehead with 6 enclosed brass tuners and brass back cover plate, ebony fingerboard edged with mother-of-pearl, ebony bridge and metal saddle. Straight neck with high action, good frets. In original wooden coffin case. Spruce top with mother-of-pearl and bone bindings and rosette, solid curly maple over spruce back and solid sides, ebony veneered neck and machine head stamped V "crown" R with brass and bone tuners, ebony fingerboard with bone and metal nut, spezial Parizot designed ebony bridge and bone saddle, earliest adjustable bridge I have ever seen. Very straight neck. Good frets, low action, a player. In original wooden coffin case. Also the earliest zero fret guitar I have seen.
